Meta’s rules for Instagram messaging
Any tool that automates Instagram DMs works inside the same rules from Meta.
- A business can message someone only after they message first, and for most actions only within 24 hours of their last message. Promotional content is allowed inside that window.
- After someone messages from a click-to-Instagram-Direct ad, the business can reply for up to 7 days from that message.
- A person on your team can reply within a separate 7-day window using the human agent tag. Automated replies can’t use it.
- Private replies to comments: one DM per comment, within 7 days of the comment, on posts, reels, stories, Live and ad posts. Once the person replies, follow-ups are allowed within 24 hours of their reply.
- The messaging API works with Instagram professional accounts. Group chats are not supported.
