WhatsApp Business API: What It Is and How to Get It
The WhatsApp Business API is how a business connects its WhatsApp number to software instead of a single phone. Meta runs it as the Cloud API on the WhatsApp Business Platform. You can use it directly if you build for yourself, or through a solution provider that gives you the inbox, automation and connections ready to use.
What the API is for
The WhatsApp Business app works well for one person answering on a phone. The API is for when more than that is needed: a team answering from one number, replies that run automatically, and conversations that read from and write to your booking, order, payment or CRM systems.
With the API, every message passes through software you control. That software can answer a question, look something up, send a template to opted-in customers, or hand the chat to a person on your team.
Two ways to get access
A business building only for itself can sign up for the Cloud API directly with Meta and write its own software on top. Most businesses use a solution provider instead, which already has the software built and connects your number through a guided sign-up.
How you are billed depends on the provider. With a Tech Provider, you add your own payment method and Meta bills you for messages, while the provider bills you for its own service. Other providers can invoice you directly for both.

What you need to start
You need a Meta business portfolio, a phone number that can receive a code, and a display name that follows Meta’s rules. You can start before your business is verified, but verification raises your limits.
| Item | Unverified business | Verified business |
|---|---|---|
| Registered phone numbers | 2 | 20 |
| Starting messaging limit | 250 unique customers in a rolling 24 hours | 2,000, then automatic steps to 10,000, 100,000 and unlimited |
| Message templates per account | 250 | Up to 6,000 with an approved display name |

Messaging limits count business-initiated messages to unique customers. Higher limits come automatically as you keep message quality up and use your current limit.
The rules that shape every conversation
You can send free-form replies only within 24 hours of the customer’s last message. Outside that window you need an approved template, and the customer must have opted in.
Every template is marketing, utility or authentication. Meta reviews each one, and a decision can take up to 24 hours. Templates are rated green, yellow or red from customer feedback, and a low-rated template can be paused.

What it costs
Meta charges per delivered message, by category and country. Customer messages are free. Service replies are free up to 1,000 a month per business phone number, then charged per message. Templates are charged per message, and marketing has no free allowance. Rates vary by country and are set in Meta’s rate cards. The WhatsApp API pricing guide sets out each category.
What this means for your business
You do not need a developer to use the API if your provider handles the build. What you do need is a clear idea of which conversations you want handled, and which systems they need to touch.
Get your business verified early. It lifts the messaging limit to 2,000, allows more numbers and templates, and is a step towards the blue checkmark. If you already use the WhatsApp Business app, you can keep it on the same number through coexistence instead of switching.
How AeroChat handles it
AeroChat connects your number through Meta’s embedded signup, and supports coexistence so you can keep the WhatsApp Business app on your phone. It covers message templates, broadcasts to opted-in customers on Growth and above, and transcribes customers’ voice notes automatically. Your team can take over any conversation, including from the mobile app.
Behind the chat, AeroChat connects to 100+ business systems with no developer. You describe the workflow in your own words, paste in a key, and it runs. See the WhatsApp CRM integrations, appointment booking with Google Calendar, human handover and team inbox, and HubSpot. The same workflows run on Instagram, Messenger, TikTok, Telegram, web chat and email.
Questions
Is the WhatsApp Business API free?
Meta charges per message you send. Customer messages are free, and the first 1,000 service replies a month on each number are free. A solution provider also charges for its own service.
Do I need a developer to use it?
Only if you build your own software on the Cloud API. Through a solution provider, you connect your number in a guided sign-up and set up replies and workflows yourself.
Can I keep my existing WhatsApp Business app number?
Yes. With coexistence you keep the app on your phone and use the API on the same number, and your chats stay in sync between the two.
Do I need business verification?
You can start without it, at a limit of 250 unique customers in a rolling 24 hours for business-initiated messages. Verification raises that to 2,000 and lets the limit grow from there.
