WhatsApp Business App vs API: Which One You Need
The WhatsApp Business app is a phone app for one business owner answering chats by hand. The WhatsApp Business API connects the same kind of number to software, so a team can answer from one number, replies can run automatically, and chats can work with your other systems. Since coexistence, you no longer have to choose: you can keep the app and use the API on the same number.
The quick comparison
| WhatsApp Business app | WhatsApp Business API | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | An owner or a very small team answering by hand | A team, automation, or higher volume |
| Where you answer | The phone, plus a few linked devices | Software from a solution provider, or your own build on the Cloud API |
| Automation | Basic tools such as greeting and away messages and quick replies | Full automated replies and workflows |
| Connecting your systems | No | Yes, to bookings, orders, payments and CRM |
| Messages to customers outside 24 hours | By hand | Approved templates to opted-in customers |
| Message fees from Meta | None | Per delivered message by category and country. Customer messages free, first 1,000 service replies a month per number free. |

When the app is enough
If one person answers every chat, the volume is manageable by hand, and nobody needs to look anything up in another system, the app does the job at no message cost. Many small shops and service businesses start here.
When you need the API
You outgrow the app when several people need to answer from one number, when customers wait for replies after hours, or when every chat means checking a booking diary, an order or a payment by hand. The API lets software do those steps and pass the chat to a person when it needs one.
The API also lets you send approved templates, such as booking confirmations or order updates, to customers who have opted in, at any time.
Using both on one number with coexistence
Coexistence lets a business keep its WhatsApp Business app number and also use the Cloud API through a provider. Chats stay in sync between the app and the API, so you can still reply from your phone while software handles the rest. A few app features change once you connect.
| Item | Under coexistence |
|---|---|
| Chat history and contacts | Sync within 24 hours of onboarding, with your consent. Group chats do not sync. |
| Broadcast lists in the app | Become read-only |
| Turned off in the app | Disappearing messages, view-once, live location and 1:1 calls |
| Linked devices | Up to 4 companion devices can stay linked |
| App version needed | 2.24.17 or later |

How the costs compare
The app carries no message fees from Meta. On the API, customer messages are free, service replies are free up to 1,000 a month per business phone number and then charged per message, and templates are charged per message. Marketing templates have no free allowance. Rates vary by country and are set in Meta’s rate cards.
What this means for your business
Stay on the app while one person can keep up. Move to the API when replies are slow, when a team shares the number, or when chats need your systems. Thanks to coexistence, moving no longer means giving up your number, your history or the app on your phone.
Plan around the 24-hour window. On the API, anything you send after a customer goes quiet for a day needs an approved template and their opt-in.
How AeroChat handles it
AeroChat runs on the WhatsApp Business API and supports coexistence, so you keep the app on your phone while AeroChat answers on the same number. It connects through Meta’s embedded signup, and passes Meta’s WhatsApp fees through at cost.
AeroChat is chat infrastructure for customer service and sales workflows. It answers, looks up the record, acts and hands over, against your own systems with no developer. See after-hours replies, human handover and team inbox, appointment booking and lead capture into Zoho CRM or Pipedrive. For Shopify stores, read WhatsApp Business API vs app for Shopify.
Questions
Can I use the WhatsApp Business app and the API on the same number?
Yes, through coexistence. You keep the app on your phone, use the API through a provider, and chats stay in sync between them.
Is the WhatsApp Business API more expensive than the app?
The app has no message fees. The API charges per delivered message, but customer messages are free and the first 1,000 service replies a month on each number are free. A provider also charges for its software.
Will I lose my chat history if I move to the API?
Not with coexistence. With your consent, chat history and contacts sync within 24 hours of onboarding. Group chats do not sync.
Can I still send broadcasts from the app?
Under coexistence, broadcast lists in the app become read-only. You send broadcasts through the API instead, as approved templates to opted-in customers.
