A click-to-WhatsApp ad is a Facebook or Instagram ad whose button opens a WhatsApp conversation with your business instead of sending the person to a website.
Why they work
A landing page asks a stranger to read, decide and fill something in. A chat asks them
to type one sentence. For anything with a question attached, a price that depends on
specifics, an appointment, a quote, a size, chat clears a far lower bar.
They also solve the attribution problem that makes messaging hard to justify. The click
is recorded in the ad platform and the conversation starts with a reference to the ad, so
you can see which ad produced which conversation.
Meta has said publicly that this format is growing fast. On its Q3 2025 earnings call
Meta’s CFO described click-to-WhatsApp ad revenue as growing 60% year on year
(reported
by Storyboard18, which cites the earnings call). That is Meta describing its own ad
product, so read it as the seller’s account of demand, not as evidence the format works
for you.
The one thing that wastes the budget
Not the creative. Not the targeting. The reply time.
You have paid for a person who is, at that moment, interested enough to open a
conversation. The 24-hour window is open and free text is available. If your first useful
reply arrives three hours later, you have bought a cold lead and will pay again for the
next one. Roughly half of consumers expect a reply within an hour
(Twilio
consumer preferences report, vendor data), and the people who clicked an ad are at the
impatient end of that.
So the honest prerequisite for running these ads is being able to answer them. If your
coverage is one person during office hours, run them during office hours, or automate the
first exchange properly. See first response
time.
What the first reply should do
Not “Hi, how can I help?” The person clicked an ad about something specific. Reference
it, then ask the one question that qualifies them.
- A clinic advertising a treatment: confirm the treatment, then ask which days suit.
- A caterer advertising a set menu: confirm the menu, then ask headcount and date.
- A store advertising a product: confirm the product, then ask the size or variant and
send a payment link.
Two practical notes
Ad clicks arrive in bursts, including outside your hours, because that is when people
scroll. And if you cannot tell which conversations came from ads, you cannot price the
channel. Make sure the ad reference reaches whatever holds your conversations.
