The WhatsApp Business API, which Meta now calls the WhatsApp Business Platform, is the programmatic way to send and receive WhatsApp messages from your own systems rather than from a phone.
The three ways to be on WhatsApp
There is the normal WhatsApp app. There is the free WhatsApp Business app, which adds a
business profile, labels and quick replies, and runs on one phone. Then there is the
WhatsApp Business Platform, the API. The API has no phone and no screen. It connects your
number to software, so an order lookup, a booking or a payment link can happen without a
person typing.
The practical dividing line is volume and connection. One person answering thirty
messages a day on a phone does not need the API. A business whose answers depend on
checking an order, a calendar or a stock level does, because a phone cannot read your
systems.
What you get
- Several people answering the same number at once, which the free app cannot do.
- Message templates for anything you send
outside a customer-initiated conversation. - Webhooks, so your software knows the moment a message arrives.
- Automation that can read your order, booking or stock data and act on it.
What it costs, as of October 2026
Meta charges per message, and the category of the message decides the rate. Its
documentation lists five categories: marketing, utility, authentication, service, and
Meta Business Agent. Service messages are the freely worded replies you send inside the
24-hour window that opens when a customer messages you.
Two dates matter. Per-message pricing replaced the older per-conversation model on
1 July 2025. Service messages, which had been free, became chargeable on
1 October 2026, with a free tier of 1,000 service messages per business
phone number per month that does not roll over
(Meta, WhatsApp Business
Platform pricing documentation). That change is the reason the number of messages it
takes you to finish a conversation is now a cost and not only a service metric.
Getting on it
You do not buy the API from Meta directly in most cases. You go through a provider that
holds the connection and gives you an interface. You will need a phone number that is not
active on the normal WhatsApp app, a Meta Business account, and business verification.
Merchants consistently describe this step as the hard part. One line from our own review
reading sums it up: “Meta’s onboarding is the biggest hurdle.”
Two things people get wrong. First, the API is a channel, not a product. It sends and
receives. Everything useful sits in the software on your side. Second, the green tick is
not required to use it, and not having one does not stop you sending anything.
